Purpose

The International Exhibition of Glass Kanazawa, first established in 1984 as the world’s only international glass exhibition with public call for entry, will have its 11th return in 2010. In each of the past events, the exhibition drew many excellent works from about 40 nations and regions around the world, and it has been highly recognized as “the world showcase of contemporary glass art”.
Kanazawa City is renowned as one of the representative traditional cities in Japan. The city’s blessed natural environment with the fascination of four seasons has nurtured many traditional arts and crafts such as lacquer ware and ceramics, which have been treasured and utilized as an integral part of the people’s daily lives. Under such circumstances, this exhibition has been repeated for the purpose of breeding in Kanazawa a new culture and an industry utilizing glass, expecting that it will help evoke creativity in other areas of arts/crafts and the existing local industries.
The executive committee hopes that this exhibition will help explore the
potential of glass and look forward to receiving wide varieties of excellent glass works as ever, from daily utensils to new artistic expressions.

Akira Miyama
President Executive Committe of The International Exhibition of Glass Kanazawa Chairperson Kanazawa Chamber of Commerce and Industry

It is a pleasure for me to celebrate the 11th anniversary of the International Exhibition of Glass Kanazawa. The first exhibition was held in 1984 as an only international glass exhibition with a public call for entries throughout the world. It aimed at promoting new lifestyle with glassware and inspiring creativity of conventional arts and crafts and originality of local industries in Kanazawa.
Kanazawa, blessed with profound tradition and culture, was registered as a Creative City of Crafts and Folk Art in the creative city network of UNESCO in 2009. It was also registered as a Historic City by the central government of Japan in 2010. It has been renowned for its interesting harmony between the old and the new.
I hope that this exhibition will help enhance potentiality of glass works from tableware to artistic objects.
The exhibition has been an open door for glass artists throughout the world and enjoyed a worldwide reputation for presenting high quality exhibits. A total of 470 applications were received from 39 nations and regions. Through the Preliminary Assessment based on slides 72 works from 21 countries were selected and will be exhibited at “The International Exhibition of Glass Kanazawa 2010.”
It is my sincere hope that the visitors will enjoy how this transparent and flexible glass would be created into attractive artworks by the magnificent artists at home and abroad.
I would like to conclude my remarks by expressing my heartfelt thanks to all those who have assisted us hold the exhibition and all the supporting organizations.

Greetings

Masanori Tanimoto

Masanori Tanimoto
Governor Ishikawa prefecture

I would like to congratulate on the opening of “The International Exhibition of Glass Kanazawa 2010.” Ishikawa prefecture is renowned for its traditional Japanese arts/crafts. This exhibition was established in 1984 to promote glass as well as other arts/crafts and industries, like ceramics and lacquerware, and to stimulate Ishikawa’s cultural activities.
This year’s exhibition drew 470 works from 39 nations and regions that display high levels of technique and aesthetic quality.
This event is the only international glass exhibition that put out a public call for glass artists and thus enjoys a worldwide reputation for presenting high quality exhibits featuring new trends of the world of glass art. I am extremely grateful for the generous support and continued effort of all those involved in the exhibition.
We will exhibit some prize winning pieces from previous years as a Pre-Exhibition at the Shiinoki Cultural Complex in August 2010. The old Ishikawa Prefectural Government Office was renovated into this cultural complex, and it boasts a magnificent view of Kanazawa Castle’s stone walls. Opened to the public in April 2010, it now sits as a new landmark in the bustling city center of Kanazawa.
From October 2, 2010 on, the exhibition will visit the Notojima Glass Art Museum, and
I hope that many visitors from all over Japan will come and enjoy the Exhibition in Noto, as well.
It is my sincere hope that this exhibition will continue to promote arts/crafts and industries, and that it will help Ishikawans pursue a life that is better, fuller, and richer.

Greetings

Tamotsu Yamade

Tamotsu Yamade
Mayor Kanazawa City

It is a great honor for me to announce that Kanazawa will host “The International Exhibition of Glass Kanazawa 2010”.
The exhibition has become world-renowned as the only one with a public call for entries throughout the world and it has drawn many excellent works from home and abroad. I feel satisfied that the exhibition has also drawn superb works with artists’ sensitivity and originality this year. I would like to express my sincere appreciation to the organizers for their great efforts.
In Kanazawa we established the Kanazawa Utatsuyama Crafts Workshop Center in 1989 in memory of Kanazawa’s centennial anniversary of municipality and later the Makiyama Glass Workshop was established in 1999. Both workshops have provided young glass artists with places for creating their works. Thus we have nurtured young glass artists and encouraged them to introduce Kanazawa, the city of crafts, to the world through their glass artifacts. At the same time we have helped educate artists and artisans who will promote traditional arts and crafts. Such efforts have been appreciated and Kanazawa was registered as a Creative City of Crafts and Folk Art for the first time in the creative city network of UNESCO in June 2009. We would like to introduce Kanazawa as the city of traditional arts and crafts and handicrafts to home and abroad.
In concluding my greetings, I hope that this exhibition will continue to grow and help Kanazawa in the endeavor to revitalize design industries and enhance international exchanges in many ways.

Chairperson Executive Committee of The International Exhibition of Glass Kanazawa Chairperson Design Center Ishikawa

I am pleased that this year marks the 11th anniversary of “The International Exhibition of Glass Kanazawa”. It is a quarter of a century since its inception in 1984. I would like to express my gratitude to all the glass artists in the world for applying for the competition and to the jurors for enthusiastically performing both the Preliminary Slide Assessment and the Final Assessment. I would also like to thank those who have supported this exhibition including Ishikawa Prefectural Government, Kanazawa City, and the Kanazawa Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
This exhibition has drawn many excellent works from home and abroad as an only international exhibition with a public call for entries. It has enjoyed a worldwide reputation for exhibiting first-rate art works. A total of 470 applications were received this year from 39 nations and regions. Through the Preliminary Slide Assessment and the Final Assessment, 72 works from 21 nations and regions were selected. These excellent works will be on display in the exhibition. Each work represents the present trend of glass art.
The characteristics of the selected and submitted works at the recent exhibitions; First, Grand Prize winning pieces are the results of novel interpretation and new challenges. They do not look like glass, but they express limitless potentiality of glass art. Second, the level of Japanese glass artists has been heightened. We can also see the growing number of Japanese glass artists and their achievements. We have witnessed the striking rise of young glass artists in Ishikawa and Toyama prefectures.
The members of the Executive Committee of the exhibition would like to make efforts to continue to hold this exhibition so that Kanazawa would become a mecca for glass artists throughout the world.
In conclusion, I would like to thank all those concerned for their generous supports and continued cooperation.
