Questions and Answers

[Audience2] As a glass artist it is stimulating to apply for such an exhibition or competition. But I don’t think we have abundant chances. There have been quite a few Japanese glass artists who have created excellent works. But I’m afraid that they don’t have so many opportunities to show their works in foreign countries. Do you have any advices?

[Takeda] You can get information on completion held in foreign countries through the Internet. There are some in the UK. But there are only a few international competitions you can apply for from Japan. Does anyone know whether or not there are some competitions Japanese glass artists can apply for from Japan?

[Carlson] That’s a problem. And there is not really an answer. I would say that what I have heard from my friend, Christensen. There is a very healthy opportunity within Denmark and they do well real focus on trying to get international events, international exhibitions so that his responsibility and that has been his success. I would add to say in the US not avoidance of such things other than funding. And I also think that many museums would like to put on events like the International Exhibition of Glass Kanazawa 2010. And there is certainly a desperate need for that for the ability for you to show your work and for the ability of having seen works from other countries in mass. So sad. Practice this event. It is really the best international event it’s available. We are very pleased because this is such a good representative and I think very conscientious representation and opportunity for glass. But that’s not an answer I can offer but I hope my friend can.

[Christensen] For several years since studio glass movement started in 1070’s there were some famous glass artists, about a hundred artists were active throughout the world. But think about today numerous glass artists are actively creating their works in their countries. Thanks to the studio glass movement, more and more artists have been involved in glass art. From this perspective, this movement has been successful. The question is very difficult to answer.
In Denmark next year, we are going to hold an exhibition showing the works of ten Japanese glass artists but it seems to be very difficult to join these ten Japanese glass artists. So I would like to suggest that you would get a lot of information from the Internet. You can also get some information from three jurors from Czech Republic, Denmark and the US. You could have your solo exhibition at a small gallery overseas. It is very difficult for you to hold international exhibition and competition not only because of financial problems but also clerical works.

[Harcuba] Today we are in the computer era. We can do a lot of things on the Internet. You can organize Internet competition. It is very difficult to hold exhibitions or competitions because it costs a lot. So especially for young artists, you have to try to show your works on Internet so that you can grasp what glass artists of the world would like to do.

[Takeda] Thank you for rewarding stories. We would like to bring this roundtable discussion to close. Thank you for your attention.
